We have learned with great regret that Mr Godfrey Dol is to relinquish his position as head grower of the Guyra Tomato Farm.
My first recollection of Godfrey Dol is that of a pleasant young Dutchman walking into Jackson Livestock and Property some ten years ago saying he was looking for land to start a tomato farm, which I imagined was to be a tin shed in a suburban backyard.
Several days later we were standing on a rural property in Elm Street, Guyra with Godfrey explaining this may be a suitable site for a glasshouse. The project would be dependent on suitable water supply, expanding from 5 to 10 hectares and then to 20 hectares over time, employing up to 300 people and cost in the vicinity of $75M.
Within 24 hours, Mayor of the day, Robyn Jackson called a meeting of Councillors to discuss the proposition of establishing a Tomato Farm in Guyra with Godfrey and Costa’s Director, Gary Meadows, with unanimous support of all present.
The property was purchased from landholder, Jim Williamson who allowed immediate access to allow council outdoor staff to connect water in record time and several weeks later land levelling and construction had commenced.
During this high speed operation, Godfrey was always available and very professional. This, combined with the Guyra Shire Council and community enthusiasm, sees the wonderful enterprise we enjoy today and is soon to be expanded.
Thanks Godfrey. Good luck in your future venture.
