Member for New England Barnaby Joyce announced $450,000 worth of funding for the Armidale Safety and Security Project on Wednesday morning to allow Armidale Regional Council to implement new security measures, including CCTV camera upgrades in Armidale and Guyra CBDs.

Armidale Mayor Simon Murray said it was all about providing safety in some of the most vulnerable areas of the city.
"Particularly along the creek lands … where a lot of vulnerable particularly female students and others have to traverse, and after hour joggers who want to use one of our key axis in the town," he said.

"They will be state of the arts solar lights some with cameras streaming back to a control. This is new infrastructure on the creek lands.
"At the moment it's difficult for people to traverse after hours. We're looking to make that growing, multicultural precinct of Girraween more safe, and that will be stage one of a project to make the creek lands more safe after hours."
In announcing the funding Member for New England Barnaby Joyce said CCTV cameras were important as a further set of eyes for people for people living in this community.
"Keeping a lookout for people who want to take advantage of the darkness," he said.
"But so many convictions now are based on indisputable evidence. Here you are walking down the street, here you are walking back down with goods that have been stolen.
"In Armidale I don't believe there is a peak in crime. There is an oscillation in crime, but you can't just accept those, you've got to do more to keep people honest."
