The levy will be paid by all property owners from July, 2017.
It will replace the existing emergency services contribution that funds firefighting and State Emergency Services paid by property owners through their home insurance, Mayor Beyersdorf said on Monday.
The rate people pay will be calculated in the next 18 months but is expected to be about $160 and added to property owners’ rates.
Mayor Cr Herman Beyersdorf said the new levy would be a much fairer system.
“Currently people who insure their property are subsidising those people who don’t,” Mayor Beyersdorf said.
“The new levy will be a much fairer system that will see insurance premiums go down and hopefully encourage more people to take out insurance.
"Armidale Dumaresq ratepayers must also understand that this is a levy being imposed by the NSW Government that will sit alongside council rates and should not be seen as an increase to the rates council charge.”
