Cyril Green started the job with Armidale Dumaresq Council on Monday, taking the reins from his predecessor Steve Widders.
Born and raised in Armidale, Mr Green has returned to home turf after more than 20 years with the NSW police force.
Mr Green, who was most recently stationed in Tweed Heads on the Gold Coast, said the first week in the job was going well.
“In my new role with Council I am hoping to bring the Aboriginal community together and to make sure that everyone has a voice and their concerns are heard,” he said.
Mr Green said he had moved back with his partner and two children.
“I’d been away for 23 years, I thought it was time to come home,” he said. “It’s good to be back.” The role will see Mr Green heavily involved in the management of Council’s Gayinyaga Aboriginal Community Consultative Committee.
He will also be responsible for organising NAIDOC Week events, implementing Council's Aboriginal Action Plan 2011 – 2015 and putting out a newsletter informing the community about Aboriginal news, events and opportunities.
Mr Green said he planned to catch up with as many people in the community as possible over the coming weeks.
“In the few days I’ve been in the role it’s clear that Council genuinely want to help and are interested in the issues affecting the Aboriginal community,” he said.
Meetings of the Gayinga committee are held the second Wednesday of the month at 12pm in the function room, upstairs in the Civic Administration Building, with community members welcome to attend.
