In Saturday's second grade semi-final between Hillgrove and City, Simpson came into bowl and managed a hat-trick off his first three balls and then finished with figures of 4-2 off 3.2 overs.
His son Ryan was in the side and said he just "had to show him how to do it."
"I surprised myself," he said.
"My plan was just to get the ball to the other end.
"Ryan was there and couldn't believe it."
Hillgrove bowled City out for a measly 51 and chased the runs down in 15 overs, losing only two wickets.
Simpson couldn't even head back to the bowling club to celebrate.
"I was supposed to but I had to go home and cook tea," he said.
They'll face The Armidale School's team this Saturday for a spot in the grand final against Guyra.
