The call is out for primary schools in Armidale to register for the 2019 Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition - the longest running annual mathematics competition of its kind in Australia.

Last August, almost 19,000 primary students from more than 310 schools across regional NSW sat the 38th annual Competition. This year's competition is shaping up to be even bigger.

Five Armidale schools participated last year, and 185 local year 5 and 6 students tested their math mettle in the 35-question paper completed without a calculator, ruler, or any other mathematical instrument.
Newcastle Permanent's Armidale branch manager Judith Hansen said she wanted local schools to show the rest what they could do while having fun with maths.
"I'm so proud to be a part of the Armidale community," she said, "and I believe that we have many students in our region who really enjoy maths and like to test their problem-solving skills. I'm urging all our local primary schools - private and public - to get on board with the Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition."
To enter the Competition, schools need to register before Friday 10 May. Students and parents should contact their school principal if they wish to participate.
The Competition is for all skill levels. It encourages students to become enthusiastic about maths; challenges them to rely on their problem-solving skills; and creates a fun opportunity to apply maths to real-life settings.
The top performing students in each region are invited to Newcastle Permanent's annual awards presentations to celebrate their achievements with their family and other maths whizzes. Selected young mathematicians are invited to attend the annual Maths Camp to further enhance their mathematical talent.
In 2018, Jack Coddington from Ben Venue Public School received the Northern Tablelands District Year 5 Award, and Khaiam Ali from Armidale City Public School received the Northern Tablelands District Year 6 Award.
The Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition is the largest of its kind in Australia. It is open to all primary school students in Year 5 and 6, with awards for the winners in each region. Registrations for the competition close Friday, May 10.
