The upgrade to TransGrid's Dumaresq substation is a key part of the plan to dramatically increase the capacity of the energy grid connection to Queensland.

The huge upgrade will help the region's renewable energy sector dispatch power to juice the lights from Sydney to Brisbane, and across both states.

The Queensland-NSW Interconnector project will also drive down power prices, provide grid stability and help the sector transition to a lower-carbon future.

TransGrid Executive Manager Delivery Craig Stallan said construction crews have completed key elements of the upgrade, including gantry construction at the Dumaresq and Tamworth substations and the replacement and upgrade of towers.

QNI upgrade work at Tamworth, Armidale and Dumaresq has employed up to 280 people since the project began in May 2020. The project is due for completion in late 2021.

Local crane operators, fencers, accommodation providers and hygiene, safety, electrical and concrete companies have all been involved in the massive infrastructure build so far, but the civil works step ended in July.

From October, specialists from Siemens Energy will install innovative Static VAR Compensator technology in the substations.

The project, when complete, will boost the local renewable energy sector by making the region a more attractive place to develop power generation.
