The Honourable John "Sandy" Macdonald is our region's only new AM, or Member of the Order of Australia.
The former Nationals Senator for NSW will be today awarded among the nation's highest honours "for significant service to the people and Parliament of Australia, and to public administration".
Aside from his position as Senator from 1993 to 1998, then 2001 to 2008, he was the party's Senate Deputy Leader, and Parliamentary Secretary for Trade and Defence during the Howard government.
Just 365 new Members are appointed each year.
Australians can also win the AO and become an Officer of the Order of Australia, or an even more prestigious AC and become a Companion.
Senator Macdonald served as the Chair of the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee and the Standing Committee on Scrutiny of Bills.
He has also been a Quirindi wool and beef producer since 1980 and a member of the Nationals party since 1978.
