THE efforts of Armidale's history buffs to preserve the stories and happenings of years gone by have received financial assistance from the State Government, with Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall announcing a $1,500 grant to cover the publishing costs of the 63rd edition of the Armidale and District Historical Society Journal.

Mr Marshall said he was pleased to be able to support the great work being done by the society to record important local history.
"We know history can shape our future when we acknowledge and learn from it which is why I am thrilled this program will support this annual project," Mr Marshall said.
"Every year Armidale and District Historical Society publishes this journal, which contains articles of original research on the history of the area, including relevant papers read at the monthly meetings.
"The journal also contains previously unpublished historical material of local and interest with extracts from personal letters and diaries, and old photographs.

"With 63 editions now in circulation, the region has a readily accessible curated archive of local knowledge just waiting to be explored.
"I wonder if by the 100th edition, which will be published in 2057, we will be reading a journal which depicts the varied experiences of Armidale locals as they lived through the interesting time that has been the global COVID-19 pandemic."
This funding, provided by the Royal Australian Historical Society Cultural Grants Program, offers local historians and volunteers the opportunity to present our diverse history through various means such as digitally and through local and regional publications allowing more people to experience it.
Copies of the 2020 journal, and all past journals, can be purchased from the Armidale and District Historical Society.
