At a meeting held on Friday night, the NERU committee accepted Central North-based Walcha's entry into the competition in addition to New England clubs Glen Innes, St Albert's College, Armidale Blues, Robb College, Barbarians and Tamworth.
All seven clubs will field two men's grades with all bar Walcha fielding women's sevens teams.
The competition will see seven round matches followed by finals with the decider to be played on September 26.
"The finalisation of a New England Rugby competition format for 2020 is an exciting step forward," New England Rugby Union president David Clifton said.
"We are excited to have seven clubs participating in first grade for the first time in over 20 years".
The zone has been working collaboratively with clubs to ensure that operation of training and match fixtures adhere strictly to Covid-19 guidelines.
The zone is hopeful with the continued easing of restrictions that clubs will be able to facilitate the inclusion of spectators at games.
New England Rugby are working with clubs in regards to player numbers and are currently evaluating the possibility of a third grade competition.
