Jeff came to Kingstown as a small child, and now lives in Uralla with his wife Margaret. In 1997 he enlisted in the RAAF, and while serving overseas suffered severe back injury when a bomb carrier fell on him, crushing his spine. The injury has necessitated around 100 operations and procedures, and he continues to receive these treatments three times a year in an effort to keep pain levels under control. In 1989 he left the RAAF, returning to the family farm at Kingstown, and purchased the property "Granite Springs" at Kingstown, which he continues to work
Jeff joined the Uralla RSL Sub-Branch in 1991, and this year celebrates his 8th. year as President and his 28th. year of active membership. He was made a Life Member of the RSL in 2007.
He was chief organiser and co-ordinator of the Anzac Day parade, and ran both the Dawn Service and the mid-morning service. He once again ran and organised the Remembrance Day Service on 11th. November.
As a member of the Uralla Memorial Literary Institute Trust, Jeff took a managerial and active part in preparing the RSL meeting rooms for upgrade and refurbishment.
He is also a member of the Uralla District Show Society, and assists with the catering for the Show.
In spite of his ongoing battle with pain as a result of his injuries, Jeff continues to serve the RSL and the wider Uralla community with dedication and enthusiasm.
YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR
Matthew and Andrew Scott
Matthew and Andrew are brothers, Matthew 25 years old, and Andrew 24, and both live in Uralla. Matthew is Project Officer for the research company Invetus on campus at the U.N.E., and Andrew is Manager (Fruit and Vegetables Section) at Foodworks in Uralla. They both attended Kingstown Primary School and Uralla Central School. Matthew and Andrew give unstintingly of their time to the R.S.L. Sub-Branch and the R.S.L. Auxiliary, and on Anzac Day helped to provide breakfast for more than 100 community members, including veterans and their friends and families. They willingly gave their time and energy to cook, clean and fetch and carry seating, arriving at 5 a.m. and cleaning up after everyone has left. They have also both assisted with catering for the Uralla Show each year in the kitchen and manning the bar. In response the drought, Andrew left his employment in Lismore to return to Uralla in order, together with Matthew, to help his family save the farm.
While not twins, Matthew and Andrew work together in a symbiotic relationship to help in physical, practical and emotional ways to support family, friends, clubs and charities in the community of the Uralla Shire and beyond.
SENIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR
Wendy Jessep
Wendy and her husband Dennis came to Kingstown thirteen years ago, and decided to take on the small business of the Kingstown store. Unfortunately, Dennis passed away four years ago, but with the support of the community, Wendy has continued to run the shop single-handed. She is currently Treasurer of the Kingstown Progress Association, and was the initiator of the selling of home cooking at the shop to generate funds for the school's P. & C. Wendy's role in the village is far more substantial than providing all the resources a small shop can give, seven days a week. It is an isolated rural shop, which is the hub of the community, and serves as a base and meeting place for organisations such as the RFS.
The school and pre-school receive a regular mail service and the opportunity to receive parcels at the shop is a huge benefit. Wendy collects parcels from the various freight depots in Armidale and Uralla on a purely voluntary basis, and this is a wonderful community service that she provides, saving time and travel costs to many.
Wendy has never denied a customer in need, often carrying a credit note until people can pay. She is held in high regard by all echelons of the community, and over the past two years as the impact of the drought grips our community, it is Wendy who sees the effect first hand, and it is her gentle nurturing way that has been a saviour to many residents.
