It will be the first of two timber bridges to receive a significant overhaul, and after maintenance on Kaurala Bridge is completed, work will start to replace decking and kerbs on Burns Gully Bridge along Platform Road at Kelly's Plains.

The Burns Gully Bridge project could begin on Thursday or Friday, and is scheduled to be finished on Sunday, November 17. Traffic delays of up to 15 minutes will be necessary during the work on both bridges.

A side-track during the Karuala Bridge works will only be suitable for four-wheel-drive vehicles with high clearance, and there will be a signposted detour via Burns Road for Burns Gully Bridge users.

Armidale Regional Council Mayor Simon Murray said about $500,000 would be spent on both projects, funded through the federal Roads to Recovery Program as part of council's Bridge Safety Program.

He said council had a backlog of about 20 old wooden bridges that needed to be replaced within the Local Government Area, and council was about to start work on two of those.

"We will be replacing the Pint Pot Creek bridge on Rockvale Road and also Dumaresq Bridge on Cook's Road," he said.

"That work is planned for early-2020.

"How long will it take to replace them all? Well, there is a couple of factors, there's going to be availablity of funding and the capability of council to manage the replacement of them."
