The entries are blind judged by a panel of industry professionals, this year we have: an author (Natalie Jane Prior), an illustrator (David Allan) and a publisher (Anouska Jones from Exisle Publishing) as the New England Writers Centers, esteemed judges.
Last year's winner was Martina Heiduczek an illustrator and graphic designer from Mermaid Beach QLD. All three judges agreed that Martina's illustration was the stand-out entry in 2018.
"her sense of colour, tone, movement and expression is sensitive and nuanced, and while her objects are lightly abstracted, their forms are balanced and their gestures vivid and engaging. Martina's interpretation of the theme is quirky and playful," all three judges said.
Martina Heiduczek prize, was a creative weekend at Pinerolo Children's Book Cottage in the Blue Mountains of NSW, with author Glenda Millard and publisher Margaret Hamilton.
As a direct result of this weekend Martina has since gone on to sign a contract with Harper Collins to illustrate a picture book with Glena Millard.
Martina had illustrated two other picture books before winning the prize.
