Guyra and Uralla clashed when the final week of the Group 19 women’s nines tackle tournament got underway on Saturday.
Uralla managed to clinch a win over their opponents to go book themselvse a battle with Narwan for third spot.
It was the Tigers who took the win to claim third.
Guyra went on to face Warialda and finished on a strong note with a triumph to round out their campaign.
The tournament also acted as a selection trial for the Group 19 representative squad for next year’s Greater Northern championships.
Uralla players Amy Barraclough, Robyn Broadbent, Katelyn Smith, Alyce Walsh, Vicki Youman and Brooke O’Halloran were chosen in the wider train-on squad.
Of the Guyra girls, skipper Britt Youman and fullback Taneika Landsborough were named alongside Narwan’s Skye Gordon-Briggs, Brooke Kingdom, Amarlia Ahoy and Jess Widders.
Youman had never played tackle before the first week of the nines and didn’t expect her name to be read out for further honours.
“I loved the nines, it was run really well and I think every single lady that was there enjoyed themselves,” she said.
“The first week we obviously didn’t go that well, but by the third week we had improved so much even won a game.
“No not at all, I never thought I would be picked.
“I was very overwhelmed as I said I never expected it.
“It means a lot to me to get picked never really done anything like it before, now time to get training and get a bit more fit.”
The Group 19 side will be coached by Kate McCulloch.
It is history in the making with 2019 being the first year women’s tackle rugby league being introduced to the country representative program.
Youman believes the sky’s the limit for women’s rugby league.
“I think women’s tackle will only get stronger in the future, may even out do men some day,” she said.
“People seem to really enjoy it, I’ve heard a few people say that ‘women play like we used to years ago!’”
Glen Innes were crowned the winners of the nines, finishing undefeated after beating the reigning champions, Moree Boomerangs, in the final.
