Carnivale celebrates the more than 80 diverse cultures that make up this unique city.
There will be songs, dances, games, and food from Indigenous, Indonesian, Bhutanese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Indian, South American, and Middle Eastern cultures, among others.
MORE STORIES:
There will also be a community co-ordinated tea-house, Australian bush dancing, and Aboriginal dancing by Duval High School.
Some groups will also teach their dancing steps to everyone at the event. Of course, it’s not compulsory to join – but once the music starts, you may find yourself joining in!
About 500 people came to last year’s festival, and this event promises to be even bigger and better.
The planning committee have reached out to more cultural groups, and even included a special program for younger people. There will be supervised games, and Linda Frame will paint faces.
Children up to 12 years old can take part in a colouring competition, sponsored by Readers’ Companion. Entries are available from the bookshop or from schools. Entries close on Wednesday and prizes will be awarded at the festival.
The committee has hired a photo booth, so anyone can have their photo taken for free. Come in your cultural clothes or colourful attire, and get into the spirit of Carnivale!
The festival will also be environmentally friendly, supporting our planet’s diversity. The Sustainable Living Committee has worked with the planning committee to include sustainable practices, while Armidale Regional Council will set up a display on basic recycling practices. Fill your water bottles there, instead of buying bottled drinks.
Carnivale Armidale is supported by the Armidale Regional Council, Northern Settlement Services (NSS), Sanctuary Services Inc. (SSI), Multicultural NSW, NSW Justice, Readers’ Companion, and Karbullah Poll Merino Stud.
Armidale Carnivale will take place at the Armidale Town Hall, Saturday May 12, and will overflow onto the closed section of Rusden Street. Entry is free.
