Under 18s Glen 56 beat Armidale 14.
A grade Glen Innes 66 defeat Armidale nil
The Glen Innes Magpies A graders have landed their first win on the field this year with a 66-nil demolition of Armidale on Sunday.
Armidale arrived in the Celtic Capital short on numbers and Glen Innes took full advantage, running in 34 points to nil in the opening half.
The second stanza brought more heartache for the visitors with a mistake-riddled attack followed by repeat defensive sets to allow the Magpies to continue their rout.
The hosts strolled over for another 32 points and denied their opponents any opportunity to put points on the board in the final 40 minutes to land the win.
With two losses and one win by forfeit for the Magpies, Glen Innes captain-coach Nick Say was relieved to earn the two points.
“It was good to get one on the board, that Narwan game I don't really take it as a win but to get the win on the field, it was a pleasing sign,” he said.
While they piled on the points, Say was more impressed with his side’s defensive effort.
“It is good to score tries and some points but to keep them to zero after they had a bit of ball on our line too,” he said.
“I was very impressed with our d [defence], our talk and our commitment to one another.
“It was a good team effort, the pleasing thing was to keep them to zero, that's the big thing so we look forward to next week.”
The Magpies’ next task is an Inverell Hawks side coming off a 38-16 loss to the Moree Boomerangs.
“A couple of injuries [out of the Armidale game],” Say said.
“They are never nice but hopefully we can work through and get them ready next week.
“They will be pretty tough over there, they always are.”
In the under 18’s clash, again Armidale were short on numbers and the hosts were able to capitalise, running in 56 points to 14.
A second-half defensive effort landed the Magpies league taggers a triumph over Armidale on Sunday.
Down 10-4 at half-time, the home side stepped up their defence to disallow their opponents points in the second session.
They scored 12 over their own in the final 25 minutes to land a 22-10 win.
“Our defence in the first-half wasn't too bad, we made three errors that were scored off,” coach David Willis said.
“When we got into the second-half and got into the groove, we started scoring some points.
“Young Emilie Hodge and Sarah Byrne stepped up.
“Abby Miller and Dee Mepham played well.
“They all played well I thought.”
