In its fourth year, the program brings together students from years seven to nine to partake in a range of activities including two ‘sitting days’ in the chambers at State Parliament House.
The program also gives ambitious participants the opportunity to debate on issues like climate change, transport and mental health policy with all ideas discussed in the chamber to be presented to NSW MPs for consideration as policy and legislation.
Attending for her second year, Ms Schuman says she is grateful to have the opportunity to be a voice for the issues and concerns of her generation.
“I am so lucky to have been again chosen to attend the YMCA NSW Junior Parliament program and would like to thank both my school and Mr Adam Marshall for their support with my application to attend again.
“Last year I was on the Sport and Recreation panel and this year have been appointed to the Mental Health panel,” she said.
YMCA NSW CEO, Leisa Hart said the program continues to break new ground every year.
“By simply giving our young people a platform to be heard, we open up so many opportunities to improve and strengthen our communities through their ideas.
“I am incredibly proud that the YMCA NSW Junior Parliament program gives young people a strong voice and look forward to seeing what this year’s talented Parliamentarians can achieve,” Ms Hart said.
The junior parliament will run between September 26 and 30.
