It was a little bit disappointing we are playing two games this weekend because we should of have a third team there and it was the first defeat for the under 10s last week
- Jason Campbell
The under 10s and the junior league tag sides have to win their matches in Uralla on Saturday to qualify for September 10’s decider.
The junior boys made their way through 2016 without a loss but finals’ nerves hampered their performance against a strong Armidale team in the major-semi final last weekend in Inverell.
They now have to take on a tough Glen Innes team to make it through to the decider. In the match against Armidale, Guyra were slow out of the blocks, allowing their opposition to put first points on the board.
They trailed 18-12 at the half-time break before Armidale extended their lead to 24 points to 12.
The junior Super Spuds managed to come within six points late in the match but it wasn’t enough to secure the win.
Coach Jason Campbell said the side didn’t start the match well against Armidale and knows his team will have to turn up to play to beat Glen Innes.
“It was a little bit disappointing we are playing two games this weekend because we should of have a third team there and it was the first defeat for the under 10s last week,” he said.
“It will be a very hard game against Glen Innes. We have beaten them twice this year but only in the last couple of minutes of both games.
“They have a couple of big fellas in their team so hopefully we can just get a bit of enthusiasm in there and do a bit of tackling because they didn’t want to do too much tackling last weekend.”
The league tag girls have to topple a strong Bingara side to qualify for the decider.
“Most of those girls have played a couple of years now so it is good to see them go through to the final,” Campbell said.
“They are a pretty good chance but Bingara have a good team so it should be a pretty even contest.”
The league tag match commences at 9.30am with the under 10s playing in the next match at 10.30am.
The club are also hosting their annual fundraiser night at the Guyra Hotel from 6pm this Saturday.
The event will have 20 items and memorabilia to be auctioned off in a fundraiser for the club including a signed Roosters jersey, a signed legends of league jumper and a half-n-half Cronulla-Canberra jersey signed by Laurie Daley and Andrew Ettingshausen.
