The Guyra team travelled to Singleton for their latest game which was played on Monday against Singleton Public School.
In the preliminary rounds they had wins over Armidale City, Nemingha and Henry Parkes (Tenterfield) before defeating Tamworth to become North West Regional Champions.
Guyra Central School has a proven track record in the competition, and were also regional winners in 2010 and 2013. Last year’s team made it through to the State semi-finals, a feat this year’s team hope to emulate.
Coach Eunice Blair said this result is something the girls worked hard to achieve especially given that the team is up against much bigger schools that can pick and choose their players.
“The team is made of mainly Year 5 and 6 students as well as two from Year 4,” Eunice said. “We basically put together a team from what we have got, while other schools have a choice of up to 100 students.”
“The Guyra girls dominated possession and were unlucky to be down 1-0 at half time,” she said. “Tori Brazier scored the equaliser in the second half, but it was a team effort.”
At the end of the game the score was still 1 all, and the Guyra girls were declared winners on corners 7-2.
“They all did exactly what they had to do, they played to their positions and fought hard for the win – they were amazing.”
They now go on to play against Foster on Tuesday October 7. Eunice thinks they are up to the task and have a good chance of getting another shot at the semi-finals.
