USED bottles and cans will have renewed value when council builds a new recycling depot on Long Swamp Road.
It comes in response to the NSW government’s Container Deposit Scheme initiative that aims at reducing the volume of litter in NSW by 40 per cent by 2020.
Council is also investigating the viability of a similar CDS collection point in Guyra.
Under the scheme, residents will be able to redeem authorized drink containers for money directly at the new facilities.
The new facility in Armidale will be an extension of the current waste management facility and will be located on the opposite side of depot road.
Schools and community groups could also benefit with opportunities for fundraising and group collecting.
Similar to the South Australian system, most drinks sold in containers between 150 milliliters and 3 litres will be eligible for a 10c refund.
Ratepayers will still be able to use their kerb side recycle bins if they choose.
