The board was officially launched by Armidale Regional Mayor, Mr Sam Coupland.

Hanging on the back wall of the library and accessible to all, the board contains 126 names of recipients from the first Order of Australia awardee, Emeritus Professor Ronald Gates AO to the most recent, Donald Hewitt OAM. Names will be added twice a year until a new board is required.

Organiser of the board, Maria Hitchcock OAM, said the names represent an important slice of Armidale and Guyra's history with recipients having been involved in the development of the region since the mid 70's.

"Their service citations cover the full spectrum of service clubs, university, local government, cultural groups, music, art, literature, theatre, environment, sport and much much more," Ms Hitchcock said.

"These recipients gave countless hours of voluntary service to benefit the region and it is fitting that we have a lasting memento of their contributions."

Twice a year, in January and June, people from all over Australia are recognised for their outstanding service to their professions or communities and are given a special medal to wear on formal occasions.

They are also entitled to display the Order letters after their name, e.g., OAM (Order of Australia Medal). Australian citizens send in thousands of nominations each year but only a small number are selected.

Construction of the Board was organised by Mrs Maria Hitchcock OAM and funded by a council community grant. Made of walnut timber, it was put together by Roy Powell at the Men's Shed and inscribed by AOK signs.

The Honour Board ceremony was followed by a celebratory afternoon tea.
