Walcha Shire Council director of infrastructure Peter Murray said his staff have offered to help with the clean up.
"Transport for NSW is the owner of the Oxley Highway, it's completely open in the Walcha LGA but it's closed east of Seaview," he said.
"At this stage we are expecting two weeks, but it's a matter of what they find when they start doing work, because if the slopes are unstable it may be a longer delay."
The only other option is to head via Gloucester, Taree or Grafton as the Waterfall Way remains closed between Maynards Plains Road and Boggy Creek Road due to a landslide.
A Transport for NSW spokeswoman said detours are in place on the Oxley Highway via the Gwydir Highway from the north and the New England Highway from the south.
"Transport for NSW has established a project team and has started procurement of the necessary resources to start remediation work, including machinery, work crews and specialised contractor support," she said.
"At least five of the land slips have caused major damage below the highway, and will be the most challenging to repair.
"Transport for NSW is currently focusing on reopening the Oxley Highway to a single lane, alternating flow. This could take at least two weeks, but is also subject to weather and safety."
The larger slopes will require detailed investigation and design, and Transport for NSW expects it will take several months to repair.
The Thunderbolt's Way is open from Armidale through to Newcastle with some road works along the way.
