That's exactly the scenario that presented itself to a Western Australian couple who will appear on this season's Wife Swap Australia.
Halls Head couple, Kellie and Brendon Cowles, along with their two children Latoya (13) and Jhett (8), took part in the reality show, which saw Kellie swap places with another wife whose spending habits couldn't have been more different to hers.
But the Cowles family almost missed the chance to be on the show when Kellie assumed the persistent calls were from a telemarketer.
"One day I got a voicemail on my phone and it was a message from Channel Seven," she said.
"I rang back - that phone call I was at the shops and they gave me 15 minutes to get home and tell my husband.
"Within 15 minutes we had an interview, then they told me we were going to the next stage and within the week I was flying out for the show."
For most people packing up and living with a family you've never met before would be daunting but Kellie said she was excited for the new experience.
"No, it wasn't hard to leave," Kellie laughed.
"I'm up for challenges, I'm up for adventure, and I wanted to give the kids an experience we can all share together."
Despite being ecstatic for the unusual opportunity, Kellie said she did have one "what the f**k am I doing moment" during the flight.
"I didn't know where we were going and you don't have any contact with the outside world," she said.
"The producer said drive us to the Perth airport and I went what!
"Within 15 minutes in the air I had that moment of what the f**k am I doing but then I went you know what this is exciting because I had no idea what was waiting for me at the other end."
When Kellie first arrived she was faced with a very different lifestyle from her own. The Peterson family were self-professed penny pinchers while the Cowles prioritised fun family experiences.
"I definitely went over there and stirred the place up with my personality and a lot of fun," Kellie said.
"I let the kids eat chicken for breakfast because they hadn't smelt a hot chook for a while.
"It was little things like that where I thought hell yes I'm bringing a bit of Mandurah to this family."
With the air date getting close, the Cowles are now on the edge of their seats waiting for the episode.
"I absolutely can't wait but the family on the other hand are a bit worried of how we will be portrayed but we sat down as a family at the beginning and we said we know the truth who cares," Kellie said.
"We are all a bit worried about Jhett because he's so cheeky and we have no idea what he was saying to the camera when we weren't around.
"We are all on the edge of our seats."
- You can watch the Cowles family on Channel Seven at 8.30pm on March 11.
