The man, aged in his 20s, was hit when he walked onto Donnelly Street in Armidale, just after 9pm.
He was knocked unconscious and suffered serious head injuries after he was struck by the Holden Commodore, near the intersection of Butler Street.
Ambulance paramedics deployed three paramedic crews to treat the man at the scene who was initially taken to Armidale hospital, before being transported to Tamworth hospital for specialist trauma treatment.

He was still in the same hospital in a serious but stable condition on Friday.
Armidale detectives have been investigating the accident, and on Friday confirmed they don't expect to lay charges.
The driver was breath tested at the scene and provided a negative result, and also underwent mandatory blood and urine testing.
After speaking to witnesses, investigators believe the pedestrian accidentally fell into the path of the car, after stepping out on the road.
Investigations are continuing.
