A number of narrowly-averted accidents were reported at the intersection of Elm Avenue and Trevenna Road in recent years, prompting UNE and Armidale Regional Council representatives to consider various safety options.
Mayor Simon Murray said his memories of the intersection during his time at the university were "vivid".
"This will be a good thing for the university campus," he said.
"When complete it will provide a big improvement in safety, and i for one would like to thank the federal government, and especially our local MP Barnaby Joyce, for finding the funding for this project."
Council secured $592,274 in funding from the RMS Blackspot Program to design and construct the single-lane roundabout.

An independent road safety audit and close liaison with UNE helped ensure the new roundabout design would also bring improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
Work will include new kerbing and guttering, storm water drainage, a centre island, relocation of the footpath and pedestrian crossing and the installation of new street lights.
An adjacent slip lane will be converted to two-way traffic, while UNE is providing detours and alternate access to its administration building during this period.
Traffic will be diverted from the intersection during construction, which will commence from February 3 and is due to finish on March 31.
In addition, an elm tree in poor health will be removed.
