The units have been identified as posing a risk to users by poisoning them with carbon monoxide gas, especially in enclosed spaces.
The recall notice says if the unit were powered by gas and were operated in an enclosed area, such as caravan or motorhome, carbon monoxide might spill into the vehicle and poison the occupants, resulting in serious illness, injury or death.
The Consumer, Building and Occupational Services said owners should find out whether their models need to be returned.
It says to find the model number, open the outside access door to the hot water heater service and check the model and serial number on the right hand side.
If the model starts with SWD4 or SWD6, the owner should stop using it immediately and check further on the product recall website at Product Recall Notice
