Mayor Simon Murray said council had run a study on the issue some time ago.
"This is the outcome of us getting some consultants in to provide some advice," he said.
"Yes, we want to streamline it. We've got areas where it's confusing, just half-an-hour, 15-minutes.
"People will know that within 'this area', particularly in the real core, this will be the length of time and outside that will be a different time. It does provide the community a more structured understanding of the parking."
Council's resolution will reduce time limits within the CBD Heart down from two-hour on-street spaces to one-hour spaces, however, all 15-minute spaces will be increased to 30-minutes.

Within what council described as the CBD Core, parking limits will be dropped from two hours to one hour for on-street spaces, and again, all 15-minutes spaces will be increased to 30-minutes.
All council three-hour off-street spaces (Jessie and Rusden streets and Cinders and Woodward lanes carparks) will be reduced to two hours.
Time limits for parking spaces within the CBD Frame will see an increase in all one hour to two hours on-street parking spaces.
Unrestricted off-street spaces will remain unchanged, including the all-day parking in Tingcombe Land and Naughten Street public carparks.
Time limits of the ground floor of the Rusden Street decked carpark will be changed to unrestricted parking. Council CEO Susan Law was delegated authority to negotiate any leasing arrangements for vehicle parking on the middle and top deck.
Cr Murray denied the changes were connected to any revenue-raising attempt.
"It's more like just streamlining. Revenue raising was not part of the issue, it's purely to streamline the parking areas," he said.
On June 26, at its Ordinary Council meeting, council considered a report relating to altering time limits for parking within the Armidale CBD. The recommendations were lost.
