Many people can recall the euphoria when we saved the Franklin River in southern Tasmania with a wave of people-powered nature conservation that flowed from the No Dams campaigns.

We went home and felt that collectively we had made a difference. We didn't go home and make any changes to our lifestyles. Instead we increased our use and reliance on fossil fuels, a major contributor to climate change.
How ironic then that large parts of wild Tasmania have, this summer, been destroyed by bushfires largely fuelled by the changing climate.
We collectively came together to save an amazing area of wilderness, but couldn't take responsibility for our own impact on our planet. Bring this into 2019 and how does it translate?
Adani's proposed mining activity in the Galilea basin and its effects on the Great Barrier Reef is today's potential environmental disaster attracting public attention.
We don't stand to benefit from the proposal, but we will be left with the environmental impacts.
Understanding the environmental impact on the reef and the adverse effects of coal usage on climate, we have all the information needed for another people-powered campaign.
Is it enough to stop Adani, when we are already experiencing the long lasting environmental effects of our own unsustainable lifestyles?
Stopping Adani may give us the warm glow and satisfaction of being involved in environmental action, but it will be the height of hypocrisy if we don't value our own environment and take responsibility for our own energy usage.
If we value our future we must ensure our everyday actions can take us there. Are our actions and decisions in line with our values?
We need to stop Adani. We need to stop all new coal mining. We must do this by ensuring that our own energy requirements are at a minimum and are met by renewable energy production.
We must consider how and where we choose to spend our dollars. We must consider how we support local food production, and we must make the right decisions.
We need to stop Adani.
