Saturday, September 15th - CREATING BELIEVABLE SPECULATIVE FICTION: a Toolkit for Writers
Presenter: ANGELA SLATTER
Join award-winning author Angela Slatter for a full day workshop on the mechanics of writing believable speculative fiction, from the finer points of word-building to dreaming up engaging characters, from creating convincing dialogue and settings to making your readers believe the lies you’re telling!
Angela Slatter’s debut novel, Vigil, was released by Jo Fletcher Books in 2016, and the sequels Corpselight and Restoration followed in 2017 and 2018. She is the author of eight short story collections, including The Girl with No Hands, Sourdough, The Bitterwood Bible, Black-Winged Angels, Winter Children, and A Feast of Sorrows.
Her work has been adapted for the screen, and translated into Japanese, Russian, and Bulgarian.
Angela has won a World Fantasy Award, a British Fantasy Award, one Ditmar Award, and five Aurealis Awards.
Sunday, September 16th – HOW TO CRAFT AN ORIGINAL STORY
Presenter: IAN IRVINE
Join award-winning author and Australian marine scientist Ian Irvine for a full day workshop focusing on the planning and design of original speculative fiction stories.
The workshop deals with the story concept, premise, central concept, and the dramatic question that drives the story. Ian will also cover topics such as the best way to tell the story, appropriate word-building, the relevance of the theme, the development of a balanced cast of characters, heightening story twists, mystery elements, and big moments, and making sure the story has internal logic.
Finally, Ian will discuss how to solve common story problems. Participants may bring along a complete short story, or be prepared to write one during the workshop. Ian will read the stories and provide feedback.
Ian Irvine has written 32 novels, including 11 bestselling fantasy novels in two quartets and a trilogy of echo thrillers about catastrophic climate change, and 13 books for children. His Three World Fantasy novels have sold over a million copies worldwide.
