A refugee from Afghanistan, the 22-year-old came to Launceston under the humanitarian visa program in 2013 for a new beginning.
Speaking no English and facing a “new world” of possibilities, he is now making the most of his opportunities.
On Saturday ‘Habib’ took part in his first Harmony Day event at the Inveresk precinct, as part of the Migrant Resource Centre North’s youth leadership group.
“I think it is a great way to show other people in the community the different cultures in Launceston,” he said.
“Everyone is really friendly and I know I was really surprised when I learned how many different cultures and communities there were in Launceston.
“Events like Harmony Day are a great way to learn something new about a different culture.
“How they sing, dance, what they eat. I am proud to be a part of it.”
Nearly half of all Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was.
In Tasmania, about 20 per cent of the population was not born in Australia.
When Habib arrived from Afghanistan, he said receiving an education was something he hoped for the most.
Attending Launceston College, it was here that he learned English and said the support of his teachers and friends was invaluable.
“I passed all of my subjects and I couldn’t have done that without their help,” he said.
“It was not easy but I did it.”
Now, Habib is continuing his English studies as well as a certificate in aged care and disability through a program offered by the Migrant Resource Centre North.
Chief executive Ella Dixon said Habib was an excellent example of someone making the most of the opportunities available to him.
“He is a great person and I think a shining example of someone who has put the effort in and is now seeing the results of his hard work pay off,” she said.
“That is what Australia is all about isn’t it. He is doing a fabulous job.”
Harmony Week is celebrated across Australia from March 18 to 25.
