They are about to embark on a model rocketry course at Williamtown Air Force Base, where they will model, build and shoot rockets.
“It’s really thrilling and will be a great start to my ambition to become an engineer,” Georgia, 15, said.
The O’Connor Catholic College schoolgirls are hoping the Australian Air Force Cadets will prepare them for a career with the Defence Force, Georgia as an engineer and Laura, 14, as a pilot.
“My goal is to secure a place in the Defence Force Academy,” Laura said.
There are 25 cadets in Armidale and Flight Lieutenant Amy Baddams and staff are on a recruitment drive for more members, to enrol in the new year.
“We aim to train and encourage young people aged 13 to 20 in areas such as leadership, team work, community involvement and of course an enjoyment of aviation,” Flt Lt Baddams said.
“Our cadets participate in field activities, flying training, tri-service competitions, firearms training ... and also a wide range of state-wide activities.”
The cadets parade every Tuesday at their headquarters in Brown Street, next to Armidale Railway Station.
After parade practice and drill they take part in lessons which include service knowledge, aviation and fieldcraft subjects, which aim to prepare them for the activities.
“If you want to become a pilot, this is the place to start,” Laura said.
