Brisbane grabbed the lead in the 53rd minute, when Brandon Borello produced a deft through ball for striker Jamie Maclaren, who cut back inside and beat the outstretched hand of Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti.
Ben Kantarovski equalised in the 71st minute after a goal-mouth scramble, to the delight of a 10,115-strong crowd.
Given the troops Newcastle had unavailable, it was a mighty effort and a step in the right direction.
