Captain Earl Sharman of the Glen Innes brigade said the onset of the cold season meant it was time to test appliances after their Summer lay-off.
In particular, he cited electric blankets, saying they should be taken to an electrician to be testsed to see if the connection, particularly near the heat control, had come loose.
Also, the lint filter on clothes driers needed to be cleaned or it could over-heat and set light to clothes.
“We are coming into the Winter check-up time”, said Captain Sharman.
“We tend to hibernate in winter and turn on all our heaters”.
He said that some people heated bags of rice in the microwave to put them in their beds like hot water bottles – but unlike hot water bottles, over-heating bags of rice could be a fire risk. They can catch light in the microwave.
