And on Christmas Day, royal bride-to-be Meghan Markle stamped her authority as a trend-maker when she donned a brown felt hat for the Firm's annual Christmas church service at Sandringham.
In case you hadn't noticed, the first church service with Queen Elizabeth II is a Very Big Deal. What will she wear? How will she curtesy?
By all accounts, Meghan won the day, greeting the larger than usual crowds who were craning their necks for a glimpse of the newest addition to the family.

After a few words of encouragement from her beau and future brother-in-law, Prince William, Meghan performed her duties before the Queen.
But let's talk about that hat.

Contrary to some reports, it's not a fascinator. And after some speculation, Philip Treacy, one of the Royals' favourite milliners, confirmed on Instagram on Tuesday that it was indeed one of his designs.

???Rather than praise Markle's elegance in such a strange and stressful situation, some Twitter users chose to throw mud - and other substances - at her choice.

Others dug into the archives to find the last time Markle was pictured in a hat.

Already known for her elegant taste in coats, Markle donned a belted beige wrap style by Canadian brand Sentaler, which has already updated its website with photos of the former Suits actress.
Made from baby alpaca and wool, the coat features ribbed cuffs and is available on pre-order for $US1295 ($1678).

After copping some flak over the price of her engagement portrait dress, the price of Markle's coat paled in comparison to Catherine's Miu Miu tartan number, which sells for more than ??2000 ($3465).
Markle didn't let onlookers down in the accessories department either, carrying a Chloe pixie suede bag, which sells for a tidy $1495.
The top-handled bag, and its half-mooned cousin, has been a favourite of street style stars since its release in the fall 2017 collection, and Markle's ownership of said bag is surely set to boost its popularity.

And to cap things off, she wore Stuart Weitzmann boots in nutmeg suede, to coordinate with her hat.
As some have observed, while Kate Middleton, who stands to become Queen, has modernised the royal dress code to some extent, Markle has fewer limitations and can be more free with her choices.
As Vanessa Friedman wrote in The New York Times: "If her future sister-in-law modernised, to a certain extent, the royal image by knocking it gently off its pedestal, Markle has the opportunity and, apparently, the aegis, to take it further."
Strap yourselves in, folks, it's going to a wild ride to May 19.
