New England Sailing Club finished on top when they hosted Lake Keepit Sailing Club for a five race regatta at Malpas Dam on the weekend.
The regatta included the first heat of the inter-club “Thunderbolt Cup”.
The host club took the teams honours by eight points to 13 (lowest score wins) based on their best three boat placings, new recruit Chris Thompson taking out first place from Lake Keepit’s Keith Garrett.
Thompson was the standout sailor of the day displaying skills that Lake Keepit vice-commodore Tim Corben commented, “most of us dream about”.
He won all the races that he finished in and usually by a large margin with his strong wind skills amazing.
Special mention was also made at the presentation of the efforts of local Armidale sailor Adam Lucas. Lucas and his mum Sally both completed the recent five week “Discover Sailing Program” run by Lake Keepit Sailing Club.
The Year 10 Duval High School student was a credible seventh in the Thunderbolt Cup race.
The second heat of the series will be held at Lake Keepit in March.
