Police allege the 38-year-old woman suffered serious injuries including a broken jaw and a collapsed lung during the confrontation at a property in Markham St, Armidale, late on Sunday.
The 30-year-old man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was arrested by police from the New England Target Action Group (TAG) and detectives at the same location shortly before 8am on Tuesday.
He’s facing three charges including reckless grievous bodily harm (GBH) – an offence, if convicted, that carries a maximum of 10 years imprisonment.
New England Inspector Roger Best told The Express the alleged victim raised the alarm on Monday, prompting a swift investigation.
“Police will allege the woman suffered serious injuries including a broken jaw, broken ribs, a collapsed lung and severe bruising during an altercation between 3pm and 9pm on Sunday in Armidale,” he said.
“About 2pm on Monday, the woman attended a friend’s house and was conveyed by ambulance to Armidale hospital for treatment.”
It’s understood she has since been released from hospital.
Police will allege the pair were in a de-facto relationship and the incident was sparked after an encounter on Sunday.
“This was a serious domestic assault on a woman,” Inspector Best said.
“Police allege the man kicked and punched the alleged victim and armed himself with a tree branch and struck the woman, causing serious injuries.”

He was not required to enter pleas and was also denied bail by Magistrate Michael Holmes. The man has been ordered to stay in custody until the case returns to court next month.

“Police take all incidents of domestic violence seriously and we will act,” he said.
“There are support networks in place to protect victims of domestic abuse and we encourage victims to come and talk to us.”
