Hayden has qualified for the 2018 Georgina Hope Australian Age swimming championships to be held in Sydney next April in the 100 metre butterfly but is hopeful to qualify in more events before entries close. Mitch achieved his qualifying time in Sydney on October 14 and 15 where he placed first in both the 50 and 100 butterfly.
He is also now within milliseconds of qualifying for Commonwealth Games trials for the 50 and 100m butterfly, which will be held at the Gold Coast in February next year.
Mitch is hoping to achieve these times when he competes in Adelaide for Pacific School Games in December.
This will be his first international swim meet where he will swim against the best school aged swimmers in Australia and the Pacific nations.
Hayden said he has had a lot of support getting him to carnivals to achieve these results.
“The Armidale bowling club who handed over a Cheque for $1000, the Armidale Sports council, the Armidale Alligators swimming club and their members, members of the community who kindly donated dollars where they could , and the many people who bought raffle tickets.
“[I would like] to thank them all for being so generous as travelling away so often for swim meets is costly.
“Training has increased, so a lot more work on endurance, perfecting the back end of the race, more kilometres in the water and a couple more gym sessions to keep on top of fitness.”
