Wimbledon 2017: Day 1 the videos

It comes but once a year – one of tennis’ Grand Slams, and arguably the most traditional, Wimbledon.

Here are five reasons why you know it's that Wimbledon time of year … from day one.

Nick Kyrgios is in the headlines

... and it’s not for wearing all white. The controversial Aussie’s Wimbledon campaign has lasted less than an hour before he retired.

Aussie commentators rue the harsh draw

It’s always the way, an Aussie cops a nasty draw. And yes, it happened in round 1 at SW19. Ash Barty, on her way back from a tennis career she has reignited after a flirtation with cricket, was one such Aussie. She faced fourth seeds Elina Svitolina.

The unexpected happens

And it’s big news! A seed is defeated – so the world stops? Well, errr, no. Goodbye Stan Wawrinka.

Real life gets in the way

Venus Williams is the only Williams sister at Wimbledon due to Serena’s much-taked about pregnancy. All eyes were on big sister Venus during round one – particularly after news that she was involved in a fatal car crash recently. Understandably when asked about the sensitive issue, Venus became distressed.
