THE kings, queens and knights will be out in force at The Armidale School on Tuesday as hundreds of young chess enthusiasts from across the region battle it out in a tournament conducted by the largest chess coaching organisation in New South Wales.

Hosted by the Sydney Academy of Chess, which coaches thousands of school children in Sydney every week, the tournament will attract around 200 students nine primary and eight secondary schools which is being held at TAS for the first time.
Primary and secondary students will play seven rounds of individual 'Swiss' competition format, meaning that no-one is knocked out of the tournament. Chess clocks will keep the action ticking along, with a time limit of 15 minutes per player per game.

TAS Chess coordinator Ms Catherine Boydell said the school was proud to be hosting the regional event, which it won in 2014 and 2015 in Tamworth.
“It’s great to be able to host the event in Armidale for the first time. It will be the first time using clocks for many players which adds another level of excitement, and we are looking forward to having young chess enthusiasts join us from across the region.”
Trophies will be awarded for the top scoring players and the top three placed schools in each heat, who will also qualify for the regional semi-finals, held in Term 3.
