The students were visited by microbiologist Gal Winter and her colleague who demonstrated how to make a garden that would survive severe floods.
Year 2 student Hamish Evans said the gardens were fun to make.
“We’re making a garden on water so that if there’s a flood or anything it can just float, this is what people have to do in Bangladesh,” he said.
Teacher Anne Hine said it was important for the students to learn about cultures other than their own.
“We are trying to be global citizens, we are trying to learn about other cultures and bring it into our own,” she said.
“Because of our International Baccalaureate Program we are trying to bring science, engineering, technology and maths all together in every classroom almost everyday.
“This is a hands-on approach to doing that and then they can watch the change happen.
“The goal is to teach the students empathy.”
