Shelter staff saw an influx of more than 18 dogs coming through the shelter since Christmas Eve.
Shelter manager Phil Evans said it was sad to see so many animals abandoned or unclaimed by their owners.
“This year there has been a constant stream of dogs and puppies coming in and unfortunately not many being claimed or taken into care,” Mr Evans said.
“We are seeking owners to come forward and people who want a dog or puppy to consider coming and rescuing one of ours.”
Owners of animals with identification are given a statutory period of two weeks to claim them before pets are put up for adoption.
Mr Evans said the shelter did not have the capacity to care for the increasing number of pets coming through.
The shelter currently has 15 dogs and puppies waiting to be claimed, adopted or fostered to relieve the pressure.
Mr Evans said the crowding was concerning leaving workers with difficult decisions on the future of the animals.
“Often at this time of year our carers are away on holidays so it’s a bit of a heartbreaking situation,” he said.
“We have had some wonderful stories of people who have rescued a dog from here.
“We want more of those stories that save these beautiful animals lives.”
