Volunteers from the city’s branch were out in the Mall this week for Wear Orange Wednesday, which aims to recognise the work that the SES does in communities.
Unit member Melissa Jones said the event also allowed volunteers to educate people about how to prepare for tough weather. “We decided to put ourselves out in the Mall during lunch time with members of the community around,” she said.
“We want to talk about what they can do during storms and severe weather for prevention so they don’t have to call the SES.”
So far this year there has been 62 callouts for the SES, with only 29 of them for storms.
The unit, which has 56 active members, also helps out at road accidents and traffic control at events such as last weekend’s Air and Auto Spectacular.
