The work will be carried out on a 700 metre stretch of road in Ebor between Pipeclay Street and Guy Fawkes River.
The new project will be undertaken by Armidale Dumaresq Council on behalf of NSW Roads and Maritime Services.
The improvements began yesterday and are expected to be completed by December, weather permitting.
Work on the stretch of Waterfall Way will be undertaken from 7am to 6pm with traffic controllers present to direct drivers through the work.
Motorists are also advised to allow for extra travel time and reduced speed limits, with the stretch also subject to temporary lane closures.
The new project comes as a $1.7 million upgrade on another stretch of Waterfall Way near Ebor was completed last year.
Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall said he was happy to see more improvements being undertaken on the main arterial road.
“Waterfall Way is a significant road for our region, providing a critical link between Armidale and the Pacific Highway and the coast, for tourists, freight and other motorists,” he said.
“I’m very pleased to see another section of Waterfall Way being improved and I will continue to lobby the government for further funds to be spent improving this important strategic route.”
The improvement work also comes as Experience Oz listed the scenic road on their New South Wales 100 Things to do Before you Die list.
The tourism provider said it included Waterfall Way on its list due to its under recognition as a picturesque drive and opportunities for scenic outlooks and picnics.
Waterfall Way made the list based on several years of customer feedback, staff input and database polling.
