A garden gnome is assisting police with their inquiries after it was involved in an armed hold-up in Sydney's west overnight.

A 33-year-old man was sitting in a car on Shamrock Street in Smithfield when he heard approaching footsteps and the sound of windows smashing, police said.
He turned to see one of four men standing next to his car was breaking its windows with the garden gnome.
Police said one of the men then punched the driver in the face before producing what was believed to be a gun.
The man was punched again, the police said, before cash was taken from his wallet.
The driver alerted police after the four men fled the scene and he was able to return to his house.
The garden gnome and a toy black pistol were found nearby and secured for forensic examination, police said.
The matter is now being investigated by Fairfield detectives, who are appealing for anyone who witnessed the robbery to contact police.
