Those who have had electrical work carried out in their home between 2010 and 2013 are being urged to contact their electrician to determine whether Infinity cabling was used.

About one year into the national mandatory recall of Infinity electrical cabling, only 2 per cent of the 1850 kilometres laced through NSW homes and businesses has been replaced.

That is, only 92 NSW properties have been rendered "safe", according to new data from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Thousands more are at risk of being razed to the ground.

The Infinity cabling is coated in inferior insulation which tests revealed could become prematurely brittle and break if disturbed, potentially leading to shocks and fires.

There is no immediate danger, but experts say the cable may become brittle from 2016 onwards.

"Consumers that purchased new properties, undertook renovations, had appliances installed or had electrical work carried out in the past few years should contact a licensed electrician for a safety inspection to determine if Infinity cables were installed," the ACCC's deputy chair Ms Rickard said.

"Consumers should not attempt to inspect cables themselves. Any affected cable installed in accessible areas or near heat sources must be removed and replaced under the safety recall."

She said electricians would typically be able to inspect a home for about $100 and costs can be recovered from the supplier if the cables are faulty.

The ACCC estimates the faulty cabling has been fitted in as many as 40,000 homes and businesses across Australia. Of the 3900 kilometres of cable sold, nearly half was to NSW consumers between 2010 and 2013.

Nationally, less than 1 per cent has been remediated and 28 per cent has been accounted for.

State and national authorities, as well as bodies representing electricians, say they are "extremely concerned" about the slow progress of the $100 million national recall.

NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe on Friday issued a mandatory recall to 25 state-based traders not covered under the existing national recall.

The national recall covered 18 national suppliers responsible for selling 85 per cent of the dodgy cabling, including Woolworths' Masters, Home Timber & Hardware and Thrifty-Link stores. The state-based suppliers were not.

He said following the national recall in August last year, Fair Trading contacted second-tier suppliers in NSW to ensure they were responding to customers requesting assistance.

"There's been a lot of work done on a state and national level to alert consumers and industry to the dangers of Infinity cable, however it is concerning that the response to those warnings and the national recall has been modest at best," he said.

"The recall is now being mandated on these 'second-tier' traders in NSW to ensure that they continue to take steps to warn and assist their customers.

On Thursday, the ACCC held an Infinity Regulatory Taskforce meeting with Electrical, Building and Australian Consumer Law regulators to speed up the recall process.

"It is clear that all businesses in the supply chain need to be doing more to alert consumers to the recall and remediation options," Ms Rickard said.

"The ACCC is urging electricians, builders and contractors to notify their customers and cable suppliers if they installed Infinity cables between 2010 and 2013."

Fair Trading has commenced legal action against Infinity Cable Co director Lu Luo, which is before the court.
