A six-month-old koala has shown her face for the first time at Taronga Zoo.

The female joey, who hasn't yet been named, was the first to be born at the zoo during this year's koala breeding season.

After a gestation period of 35 days, she was born into her mother's pouch and has stayed there suckling for the past six months.

Koala keeper Laura Jones said the joey was starting to explore the world and would soon get more distinctive fluffy fur.

"She's still quite shy, but we're beginning to see her little face more and more," Ms Jones said.

The tiny koala is the third joey for experienced mother Wanda. She still drinks her mother's milk but has started mouthing eucalyptus leaves.

The joey will spend at least another four months with her mother, the zoo says, until she becomes independent.

"Wanda is a very relaxed and attentive mum," Ms Jones said.

"She keeps her little one nice and close at all times and I've never seen her complain when the joey is scratching around with its claws inside her pouch.

"It won't be long before [the joey] can't fit back inside the pouch. At that point she'll start to cuddle up with mum, only putting her head back inside the pouch to drink."

Though this joey was the first to be born and emerge, there are four more waiting in their mothers' pouches for their moment in the spotlight.

It's expected one more joey will emerge in the next three or four weeks, with the others to follow afterwards.
