Tens of thousands will pour into Melbourne’s Moonee Valley to watch the Cox Plate, Australia’s premier weight for age race, and while the crowd certainly won’t be that big in Armidale, hundreds are tipped to flock through the gates for a terrific day of racing
The six race meeting attracted 79 nominations and while Armidale Jockey Club secretary Jim Dedes would have liked that number a little larger, he is still excited about the fields.
“It should be a really good day,” he said.
“The fields could have been a little better, but there has been a fair bit of racing on lately and a fair but coming up.
“We still have pretty good fields.”
Dedes said the large number of events happening in Armidale this weekend should help bump the crowd up.
“We are hoping for a bit of a rub off from other things happening in town,” he said.
“The Barbarians rugby club are one of our sponsors and I know they are bringing a huge crowd.”
The track is in excellent nick according to Dedes and he expects it to be a Good 3 tomorrow.
“The track is looking very good, probably the best it’s been this time of year,” he said.
Five local trainers have horses nominated for tomorrow and pending acceptances will be in action.
Lea Selby has nominated Rhodonite and Venera, while Keith Smith has Random Ruler and Seaside Tiger, Barry Smith has Goodooga, Paul Grills has Luna Lang and Postman Rocks and Frank Tanner has Middleman Jack.
