All of this hyper-local weather information comes from the Bureau of Meteorology's service MetEye, which is due to complete its nationwide rollout in late 2014.

The interactive service allows users to pinpoint within a six-square-kilometre area what the forecast is for their suburb or rural area for the next week.

The bureau's old system relied on weather forecasts covering much broader areas. For example, many users have relied on the forecast for Parramatta to cover the whole western suburbs.

MetEye is one of the products developed as part of the Next Generation Forecast and Warning System, a $30 million upgrade of weather services funded by the federal government.

"The implications for rural coverage are huge," said Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman Julie Evans.

"In the past we couldn't physically write enough forecasts to cover those huge areas, now farmers can drill down their own forecast to a six-kilometre radius."

The information is broken down into three-hour slots over seven days.

Users can choose to allow the service to geo-locate them via their computer or they can type in their postcode and MetEye will generate information on temperature, humidity, rainfall and storms.

Where relevant it will also produce information on sea temperature and wave height.

Rhys Day, a 32-year-old film-maker and self-confessed weather tragic, is excited about the service.

"You are always relying on gaps in the weather, especially in my industry. To be able to forecast when I can go outside with a crew and shoot an exterior scene is essential."

At this point, the service remains at an experimental stage with a disclaimer stating: "The bureau cannot guarantee the accuracy or completeness of all data contained, all information should be considered illustrative and indicative."

Crucially, the service omits weather warnings. The bureau warns users not to rely on it when extreme weather has been forecast.

"It is provided as a public service and data should be used entirely at your own risk. MetEye does not replace the bureau's official forecasts and warnings. It should not be used for critical decision-making," a statement on the bureau's website says.

Ms Evans would not comment on when the service would leave the experimental stage.

However, she said that eventually MetEye would become the default all-in-one weather service, with warnings and all other essential information included in the portal.

The bureau has faced increasing competition from private forecasters such as Weatherzone and third-party apps such as Willyweather or Rain? and the biggest drawback of MetEye - and one that will irk weather observers such as Mr Day - is its lack of a mobile app.

And while the bureau has an award-winning mobile website, many would be unaware that it exists as users' mobiles continue to default to the desktop site.

Mr Day, who checks the bureau's website several times a day, said he had no idea there was a mobile site. 

"The bureau's full website is absolutely impossible to use on a mobile," he said.

The bureau would not comment on when it would be a releasing an app or on the accessibility of its mobile site.
