A long range penalty from star fullback Keith Ellis handed the Baa Baas their second straight win and shot them three points clear of Guyra on the competition ladder.
“It was a very good win,” Baa Baas co-coach Brett Monley said.
“It was a very hard fought win too.”
Baa Baas got off to a flying start in wet and freezing conditions in Guyra.
A try and two Ellis penalties gave them an 11-nil lead early on.
The big Guyra pack then started to get a roll on and it was actually the hosts who took a 14-11 lead into the break.
“We knew Guyra would come back hard,” Monley said.
“We told the boys at half time that we needed to dig deep to win this one.”
The majority of the second half was a tight grinding affair.
Guyra did have some chances deep in Baa Baas half, but they were repelled and then became frustrated.
Ellis slotted home a close range penalty to tie the match up at 14-all, before he was given another chance from 45 metres out in the dying minutes.
It just snuck over the crossbar to hand Baa Baas a crucial win.
“The boys showed a lot of character to win that one,” Monely said.
“It was really good to watch, they have really improved getting towards the business end.” Josh Dunne and Sam Gates were again outstanding in a forward pack Monley credits for setting up the win.
Baa Baas take on Robb College this weekend and a win can ensure a semi-final spot, but a Guyra loss to the Armidale Blues can also seal it.
“We have another tough one against Robb and I think it’s a must win,” Monley said. “I think Guyra are more than capable of beating the Blues.
“The way we’re looking at it is we’re only three wins away from winning a grand final.”
