Few Australian personalities have fallen as far as the Olympic silver medal-winning swimmer, but his former wife wants to see him do well.

''Of course I care that he gets better, he's the man I married, a lot of me still loves him and of course I want him to have a fruitful life,'' Dawson said on Saturday. ''He'll be the only man I'll ever marry and it's broken my heart to see him go through such hardship, and I wish him all the best.''

In an explosive and emotional tell-all interview - to air on 60 Minutes at 7.40pm on Sunday - Miller breaks down as he addresses headlines that have ranged from criminal convictions for drug offences, stolen goods and prohibited weapons to accusations of his being a pimp and a drug dealer, and his battle with the drug ice, which he admits has gripped him ''by the balls''.

In the interview - which was filmed six months ago but could not be aired until now for legal reasons - he also tells how he lost millions in the controversial home insulation scheme and his failed marriage to Dawson.

The former swimmer, father to two-year-old Jack, is reportedly still battling his addiction but is trying to rebuild his life in the hope of setting a better example for his young son.

Dawson, who has been open about her own battle with depression, said she was unsure if she was strong enough to watch the interview.

''I continue to fight my depression - it's a bitch of a thing - and I fear watching something like this as it's the most painful time in my life,'' she said.

''I will be with a friend, but I am not looking forward to it. It was a painful time in my life and it might not be good for me. To me it's well over 10 years ago. This broke me very much. I had to go away for five years and leave this country and rebuild my life … I've adjusted and moved on but it is still very painful.''

Dawson said she could still forgive Miller. ''It's human to forgive and you have to remember this is a long time ago. I'm still in touch with his family, his sister especially, and I want the best for him, like everyone does. 60 Minutes might be something he needed to do and I respect that. There's no point not forgiving. I sincerely wish him the best.''

To be shown in Sunday night's TV report is never-before-seen footage of the police roadside sting in which Miller was arrested in Kings Cross carrying seven grams of ice on suspicion of dealing drugs as well as being busted with $15,000 in cash.

It is the drug that has him firmly in its grip. ''At the present time that's what, that's what's got me by the balls. So that's what my addiction is at the moment. It's what I'm struggling with,'' he says in the interview.

Miller talks of the Sydney party scene he inhabited, saying initially it was not just cocaine. ''Ah, ecstasy as well, probably just those two, 'cause it depends on which crowd you're with, the nightclub crowd or the dinner party crowd,'' he says. ''I was, yeah, I enjoyed both crowds.''

On reports his marriage to Dawson 14 years ago ended after he was caught having sex on tape with another woman and doing drugs, he says: ''That's Charlotte's story. Where's the tape? I've never seen the tape, have you?'' When interviewer Tara Brown presses the point, he asks: ''Have you seen the tape?'' to which she responds ''No … I haven't seen the tape. And I, I must say, I wouldn't really want to see it, but is it, did it not happen?''

''I'm not saying drugs didn't get, get snorted, but there was no sex in any toilet,'' Miller says. When Brown then asks if there is a tape of him snorting drugs, he responds: ''No, there's not. You know what the tape is? The tape is of me walking into a, walking into the toilet.''

Brown asks: ''But you're saying now that you did snort drugs, but you didn't have sex?'' Miller: ''I snorted drugs yeah, didn't have sex.

Dawson said on Saturday she had never seen the alleged sex tape but had been assured it existed by her flatmate at the time (who said he saw it) and Miller's agent at the time, Harry M. Miller, and her own manager during that period, Mark Byrne.

''Harry and Mark told me it existed and my flatmate at the time saw it, but I was never allowed to see it. No tape has ever surfaced,'' she says.

Miller last month avoided jail again. He is on a suspended sentence over two charges of possessing methamphetamine, also known as ice. Magistrate Jan Stevenson gave him one last chance to avoid prison at the Downing Centre Court, noting concern for his toddler son.

Last week Tom Malone, 60 Minutes' executive producer, said Miller ''is doing better and trying to get his life back on track. I think it is a daily struggle at the moment.''
